Vision

Attaining new heights in Biotechnology research, shaping the biotechnology into a premier precision tool of the future for the creation of wealth and ensuring social justice – especially for the welfare of the women.

Mission

The Department of Biotechnology is to provide academic training and conduct research in the interdisciplinary areas of biotechnology with a particular emphasis on extending the knowledge generated from these studies towards the development of technologies of commercial significance to women.

The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2003. The department has well qualified and supportive faculty members and a strong focus on quality teaching for the students at all levels. The department has separate R & D Lab and separate library with sufficient titles. The department has well equipped lab facility with sophisticated instruments such as GC, HPLC, Bioreactor and UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Increased intake of students and multiple students scholarships and awards are available to support the students. Awards for excellent performance from students as well as faculty side. The department has highly qualified and well experienced faculty with Doctorate degree in the field of Biotechnology The faculty members are actively engaged in research and constantly publish papers in International and National Journals. The Department regularly conducts Technical symposia, National Conferences and Faculty Development Programs for the benefit of both teaching and student community.

The department has well-equipped specific laboratories for Biochemistry , Microbiology, Molecular biology, Immunology, Downstream Processing, Chemical Engineering ,Bio process Engineering, Genetic Engineering, Bio-organic Chemistry, Plant Tissue Culture and Bioinformatics.

The Department of Biotechnology is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) The Department of Biotechnology feels proud that it is recognized as the "RESEARCH CENTRE" by Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore and Chennai Doctoral Degree programs.

BioChemistry Lab

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes in living organisms. It deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules. The experiments included in Biochemistry Lab are fundamental in nature, dealing with the identification and classification of various carbohydrates, acid-base titrations of amino acids, and isolation of proteins from their natural sources, etc.

Microbiology Lab


Microbiology Lab

The Microbiology Laboratory is a complete diagnostic lab that performs testing for a full range of human pathogens including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria; yeasts and molds; blood, tissue, and enteric parasites; and mycobacteria. Techniques used include culture from a wide variety of specimens, special stains, direct antigen detection (Group A streptococci, Cryptosporidium, Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis), molecular real-time PCR diagnostics, and toxin assays (Clostridium difficile and enterohemorrhagic E. coli).

Molecular Biology Lab

The branch of biology lab that deals with the isolation, estimation and manipulation of DNA so that it can be sequenced or mutated. If mutated, the DNA is often inserted into the genome of an organism to study the biological effects of the mutation.

Downstream Processing Lab


Downstream Processing Lab

Downstream processing lab refers to the recovery and purification of biosynthetic products, particularly pharmaceuticals, from natural sources such as animal or plant tissue or fermentation broth, including the recycling of salvageable components and the proper treatment and disposal of waste. It is an essential step in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, hormones (e.g. insulin and human growth hormone), antibodies (e.g. infliximab and abciximab) and vaccines; antibodies and enzymes used in diagnostics; industrial enzymes; and natural fragrance and flavor compounds.

Genetic Engineering Lab

Genetic engineering lab alters the genetic make-up of an organism using techniques that remove heritable material or that introduce DNA prepared outside the organism either directly into the host or into a cell that is then fused or hybridized with the host. This involves using recombinant nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) techniques to form new combinations of heritable genetic material followed by the incorporation of that material either indirectly through a vector system or directly through micro-injection, macro-injection and micro-encapsulation techniques.

Plant tissue culture lab is a collection of techniques used to maintain or grow plant cells, tissues or organs under sterile conditions on a nutrient culture medium of known composition. Plant tissue culture is widely used to produce clones of a plant in a method known as micro propagation.

Bioinformatics lab is an interdisciplinary scientific field that develops methods and software tools for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data.
